Join the Hawaii VINE project for a bird identification workshop for the first time on O‘ahu’s birds and conservation efforts!
The Hawaii VINE project is a long-term research study focused on seed dispersal networks across O‘ahu. As part of our work, we conduct point counts to identify and quantify the number of birds found in certain parts of the island. Participants will learn to identify birds by sight and sound and to conduct point counts, which are essential to many bird conservation efforts.
Instructors: The VINE crew is a group of biologists who double as bird enthusiasts! We are from various states and range in years of experience, but we have all dedicated our careers to field work to conserve wildlife. Part of our passion is to share and educate about birds and conservation, so we are thrilled to offer a hands-on experience. We know how important it is to learn science in real time, and we can't wait to share our work with students!
The class will be held indoors and outdoors and participants must be prepared for uneven terrain and outdoor field conditions, including rain and mosquitoes.
This class is open to ages 12+. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. This structured field workshop is intended for individuals who are genuinely interested in learning bird identification and conservation monitoring skills.

PAH is a Hawaii-wide group of artists who produce works using soft, sometimes known as dry, pastels. The pieces must consist of at least 80% soft pastel. Used for hundreds of years by the likes of Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Pablo Picasso, and Pierre-August Renoir, soft pastels are nothing more than pigment (or color) held in a stick form by a minimum amount of binder, allowing the artists many ways of applying and manipulating the color.

Scenes from Hawaii tend to feature prominently in PAH paintings, but you can also see portraits, still life, and maybe even a few abstracts. Come see some views of the islands and more through the loving eyes of these local artists.

Painters and ceramicists collide in "Forms of Voids." Two local artists—painter Kloe Kang and ceramicist Suzanne Wolfe—explore the symbolic power of the bowl, bridging the gap between ethereal painting and tactile clay.

After first collaborating in 2007 at the Honolulu Academy of Arts (Linekona), Kang and Wolfe reunite for a shared investigation of one of humanity's most elemental objects. The exhibit uses the simple form of a "bowl" to explore complex themes of identity and physical reality.

In this renewed partnership, the artists transition from sharing a studio to sharing a conceptual anchor. Kang’s paintings function as "visual pronouns" exploring the ephemeral state of being, while Wolfe’s ceramic forms remain rooted in material reality, layered with intricate text and imagery. It is a compelling look at how local artists collaborate and evolve across different mediums over decades.

Get ready to pull for a purpose with the return of Special Olympics Hawaiʻi’s Truck Pull & Spring Fest, Presented by Coca-Cola Bottling of Hawaiʻi, which will take place on Saturday, April 18, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Ka Makana Aliʻi. The event invites teams of eight to compete to see who can pull a 40,000-pound Coca-Cola semi-truck 30 feet in the fastest time. Registration is now open at bit.ly/SOHI2026truckpullspringfest.

The Special Olympics Hawaiʻi Truck Pull & Spring Fest is a unique challenge that will test strength, teamwork, and determination in an unforgettable experience. Each team is asked to raise a minimum of $2,000 or $250 per team member. The event invites the community including (but not limited to) first responders, local businesses, fitness enthusiasts, high school groups, churches, and service clubs to “pull together” to support local athletes with intellectual disabilities. Teams will compete in the following divisions:

Community

First Responders

High School (10 per team)

Awards will be given for the fastest times in each division, but the true goal is to have fun and embrace the challenge of “pulling for a purpose.” Volunteers will be available to help those who need assistance with pulling the truck or need additional people to complete their team. All participants, regardless of division, must be at least 14 years of age.

Special Olympics Hawaii Director of Development Tracey Bender shares, “We’re excited to bring back the Special Olympics Hawaiʻi Truck Pull & Spring Fest, Presented by Coca-Cola Bottling of Hawaiʻi, for its second year, and to witness the momentum and community support continue to grow for this event. The Truck Pull is about more than strength — it’s about showing up for our athletes, working together, and proving that when we pull as one, we can create meaningful opportunities and lasting impact.”

In addition to the Truck Pull, the Special Olympics Hawaiʻi Truck Pull & Spring Fest will feature ono food from local vendors, a display of various first responder vehicles, a celebrity dunk tank, family-friendly activities, live entertainment, and booths showcasing local products and crafts. Admission to the event is free and spectators are welcome.
