René Vaca is a 28-year-old stand-up comedian, writer, and actor from the San Fernando Valley in Southern California. HCT’s After Dark presents “Be More Chill” July 30 - August 16 at The Pūhi Theatrical Warehouse. Performances run Thursdays through Sundays at 7 p.m. This PG-13 musical comedy follows high school student Jeremy Heere as he navigates friendship, popularity, and teenage life with the help of a mysterious supercomputer called “The Squip.” Directed and musically directed by HCT alumnus Taj Nakoa with choreography by alumnus Jake Lester. Ali Wong is an Emmy award-winning actress, comedian, writer, and producer known for her breakout Netflix stand-up specials "Baby Cobra," "Hard Knock Wife," and the Emmy-nominated "Don Wong." She released her fourth and latest Netflix comedy special, "Ali Wong: Single Lady" in October 2024. Ali received a Golden Globe Award for the special and was nominated for a Critics' Choice TV Award and a Directors Guild of America Award. Wong recently directed Frankie Quiñones’ upcoming stand-up special for Hulu.
In Spring 2023, Wong starred in and executive-produced the Netflix and A24 dark comedy "Beef" opposite Steven Yeun. The series premiered in April 2023 to widespread acclaim, receiving 8 Emmy Awards and 13 nominations. Wong's performance as Amy Lau earned her the Emmy, Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and Screen Actors Guild Awards for "Best Actress in a Limited Series." She also executive-produced and voiced the lead in the offbeat and zany animated sitcom "Tuca and Bertie" and directed Sheng Wang's 2022 comedy special "Sweet and Juicy." In 2019, Wong released her New York Times bestselling autobiographical book, "Dear Girls: Intimate Tales, Untold Secrets & Advice for Living Your Best Life." Please join us, talk story with our vendors, learn about their businesses and crafts, and enjoy breakfast or lunch at our picnic tables with the Mauna Kea view—where North Hawaii comes together.
Spam can harps, rice bag drums, tin can gongs, and other musical instruments made from repurposed rubbish are on display at Hamilton Library Bridge Gallery now through mid-August. All instruments were custom built by Benjamin Fairfield, author of the illustrated children's book Kani Ka 'Opala: How can garbage sing? Fairfield (lecturer at UH and Hawai'i Pacific University) was featured last October on the Conversation as a climate-action-artist-in-residence with the State Commission on Climate Change in 2025. Come view, play, and listen to an assortment of rubbish instruments. A great way to celebrate Earth Day and aloha 'aina.
