Mālama Wao Akua is a juried art exhibition celebrating the native species of Maui Nui (Maui, Lāna‘i, Moloka‘i, Kaho‘olawe). In its 20th year, Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center is thrilled to collaborate with East Maui Watershed Partnership (EMWP) to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our islands’ unique ecosystems and species. The Hui and EMWP believe artists have a powerful and vital role to play in our local conservation efforts; by providing the public with a creative and intimate way of interacting with rare native species, artists help spark conservation and inspire care for the exceptional environments surrounding us.
Wao akua can be translated in Hawaiian to mean “realm of the Gods” or “distant mountain region believed to be inhabited by spirits.” When we mālama something we agree to take care, observe, attend, preserve, and protect it as a service or honor. This exhibition reflects the importance of Maui Nui’s native species and encourages us all to learn and to mālama these special places, plants, and animals.
This invitational exhibition features ten contemporary ceramic artists with connections to Hawai‘i who will develop new bodies of work that explore the medium of clay and earth-derived materials through a diverse breadth of processes. Artists are encouraged to think about the potentiality of clay and related mediums by experimenting with innovative approaches that complement their concepts and activating the surrounding space with the dimensionality of their work. This multi-generational group of artists represents a variety of established backgrounds in exhibitions, education, and informed skillsets. The invited artists are: Clayton Amemiya, Jake Boggs, Jisoo Boggs, Rachelle Dang, Roberta Griffith, Codie M. King, David Kuraoka, Jenna Macy, Sarah Metz, Brad Evan Taylor. The gallery is open during the exhibit's dates of August 27 to October 19, Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 4pm and before certain Castle Theater shows. Admission is free.

Maui OnStage Education and Youth Program presents - SNOW ANGEL. Sponsored by Wave of Harmony in partnership with The Gilbert and Aileen Kam Chuck Charitable Trust.
When the quiet town of Deerpoint, Vermont is hit by the biggest blizzard in 107 years, a mysterious girl named Eva steps out of a snow bank and into the lives of 15 confused teenagers who are asked to help her in her search. What Eva’s searching for — and who she truly is — becomes a mystery that baffles, divides, and energizes the teens of Deerpoint. Told through journal entries and interactions among the students over the course of a single snow day, Snow Angel is a funny and eerie tale of teen angst, discovery, and the power of believing. Just how much is real, and where’s the line between fiction and reality?
