On your mark, get set, the 17th Annual Run for the Dry Forest is coming to Puʻuwaʻawaʻa on Saturday October 19, 2024. You can choose to run or walk a 5K course (suitable for most people and jogging strollers) or a 10K course, which is an “extreme trail running experience” featuring a 1200 ft. elevation gain in the first 3 miles. There will also be a free, non-competitive ¼ mile Keiki Dash, educational booths, and a silent auction with items from local businesses. It’s fun for the whole family. The 10k begins at 7:45 am, and the 5k follows at 8am. Every year we highlight a special native dry forest species. This year we are featuring A‘e, a member of the rue family and endemic to Hawaiʻi. Aʻe can be found on Hawaiʻi Island, Maui, Molokaʻi, and Lānaʻi, in dry forests, where it grows on lava flows, and mixed mesic forests. Itʻs bark is pale to dark gray, and the leaves are lemon-scented! Paid entries receive a 2024 Honohono race t-shirt, a reusable race cup (to reduce waste) and a ticket to enter a drawing for a door prize. The Run for the Dry Forest is a collaborative event hosted in conjunction with the Division of Forestry and Wildlife, the US Forest Service, and Akaka Foundation for Tropical Forests. Proceeds from this event will be utilized to support natural resource conservation and management of related projects in Puʻuwaʻawaʻa and the adjacent Puʻu Anahulu. General admission fee is $45 for adults and $25 for kids 14 and under running in the 5k or 10k races. Sign up early as we will have staggered increases in registration fees and there will be no race day registration. For more information please visit akakaforests.org or the napuuconservationproject facebook or instagram.
