For the 80 Years of Closure Commemoration of when Honouliuli Internment Camp closed, the National Park Service in partnership with the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i, Kinetic Productions, and Pacific Historic Parks, will be bringing special film screenings of "Voices Behind Barbed Wire" on all neighboring islands.

"Voices Behind Barbed Wire", a film by Kinetic Productions, tells the story of Japanese-Americans living in Hawaiʻi after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and how their families were affected by martial law. Following the film will be a panel discussion with Ryan Kawamoto, director of the film, Carole Hayashino, President Emeritus of the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i, and Christine Ogura, Superintendent of Honouliuli National Historic Site.

In September, in partnership with the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center, the film will be shown at the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center on Maui. There will also be a Honouliuli NHS pop-up exhibit display at the Wailuku Public Library all month in coordination with the film.

Experience a collection of new Hawai'i-made short films celebrating reflection, perseverance and hope. WISHFUL THINKING Shorts features four locally produced films: WISHFUL THINKING, directed by Kim Mi Ly; CHEERS TO MAYBE, directed by Sara Brekke Gatiuan; ALMA'S SECOND ACT, directed by Michelle Umipeg; and CHARACTER BREAKDOWN, directed by Ixchel Lopez. The screening is part of HIFF WEDNESDAYS, a new your-round series from the Hawai'i International Film Festival and Consolidated Theatres celebrating Hawai'i filmmakers and bringing local stories to audiences across O'ahu.

The 30-minute documentary "Along Comes Larry," by Rick Quan, focuses on Hawai'i-born Larry Ramos, who with his band, The Association, became the first Asian-American to win a Grammy Award. "Sirà" ("Broken"), by Jason and Angelica Yulo-Batin Quinn, tells the story of a fraught father-daughter relationship in Hawai'i. "Sirà" was recently screened as part of the Cannes New Wave Showcase and "Along Comes Larry" has been nominated for a regional Emmy. Join us for this evening, which will include a raffle of movie posters, movie passes, and other valuable items. This event is organized by FAUW (the Filipino Association of University Women), which promotes education about the culture, arts, and history of Filipinos.

Celebrate the life and legacy of Mary Foster during a special day of historical and cultural programming at Foster Botanical Garden as part of Hawaiian History Month.

Explore the history of Foster Botanical Garden through special docent tours, documentary screenings, cultural presentations, and historical reenactments presented by the Friends of Honolulu Botanical Gardens and Hawaiʻi Ponoʻi Coalition.

Screenings will take place in the Conservatory Classroom, which has seating for 30.

Experience a presentation of the Karaniya Metta Sutta in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi at the Bodhi Tree.

The Friends of Honolulu Botanical Gardens will bring the early history of Foster Botanical Garden to life through historical reenactments.

Director Kimberlee Bassford present BEFORE THE MOON FALLS, an intimate and thought-provoking portrait of acclaimed Samoan writer Sia Figiel, eight years in the making. Following a tragedy, the film examines Sia's tumultuous journey and explores the complexities of mental illness and its devastating impact on individuals, families, and communities. BEFORE THE MOON FALLS was the recipient of the 2025 Hawai'i International Film Festival Made in Hawai'i Prize. The screening is part of HIFF WEDNESDAYS, a year-round theatrical series celebrating Hawai'i-made films and filmmakers.
