Community Calendar

Hōʻike Open Mic is held every Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM by appointment only. Community members are invited to reserve a free 10-minute slot to share music, poetry, stories, ideas, or other creative expression. Performances are recorded and aired the following week on Hōʻike.

By the ages of 7-12, hula students have developed a longer attention span. They have greater facility in using a medley of hula implements, and are capable of more advanced choreography.

Participation in this hula halau (school) is one of the best introductions to Hawaiian language and culture. Children will learn both hula kahiko (ancient hula) and hula auana (modern hula), with the basic steps as well as oli (Hawaiian chants). Some classes may learn to use implements, such as the ipu (gourd drum).

Kumu Mālia imparts a genuine enthusiasm for learning as well as a deep appreciation of nature.

Please reserve your spot to participate and kindly let your instructor know of any injuries or contradictions. Your enrollment is a commitment to all 12 weeks and no credits are refunded for missed classes.

Class size for Keiki Hula is limited to 12 to ensure quality attention.

THE STORYTELLER

From Pō to Ao, from sky to earth, from ocean to land, to man, to gods, and back again. When Haumea receives a hōʻailona, (an omen) she strives to avert a tragedy that not even the most unyielding of mothers can avoid. When Makaliʻi and Hōkū arrive at their grandparents' house, the family confronts a new reality, where grief is cried from the living and from the dead. This is a story of how moʻolelo infuses resilience and pieces together lives, all woven by the Kumulipo, the ultimate storyteller, who echoes who we are and where we are going.

*This production will be performed in a combination of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Language), Hawaiʻi Creole English (Pidgin), and English languages.

Young children seem magnetically drawn to Kumu Mālia. She’s full of laughter and magically engages their attention and imagination. She has produced her own album of Hawaiian songs for children called “Keiki Hula Love”, many of which the children learn and perform in her series.
