International marine conservation group Mission Blue has named Kahalu‘u Bay on the Kona Coast a "Hope Spot." The bay is the 141st Hope Spot worldwide and the second of its kind in Hawai‘i. Maui’s Olowalu Reef was the first.

"Deadliest Catch: Bloodline" follows Captain Josh Harris and his crew as they angle for ahi and other deep-sea fish off the coast of Hawaiʻi Island. Harris is the son of Captain Phil Harris of the vessel Cornelia Marie, one of the featured skippers on the original series.

The first cloned mammal in the country has moved from Hawaiʻi to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington D.C. The cloned mouse was born in a lab at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in 1997.
