John Kalani Zak, host and producer of the HSO broadcasts, gave a preview on Evening Concert with host Craig DeSilva. His piano teacher didn’t think he could do it. But Clayton Stephenson proved her wrong, becoming the first black pianist to become a finalist in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2022. He stopped by Hawaiʻi Public Radio to talk to Evening Concert host Craig DeSilva.

American violinist Nathan Meltzer won the 2023 Concert Artist Guild Competition. He’s the youngest ever to win the Windsor Festival Competition. He is also the protégé of Midori’s Partners in Performance program, a nonprofit that promotes classical music in rural areas of the country.

Love and music were on Evening Concert for Valentine’s Day. Punahou School music instructors Steven Casano and Helen Chao-Casano talked about their love of music and each other as married partners. Both are pianists. Steven teaches shakuhachi and Helen is the music director of Punahou’s Music School.

Soprano Leslie Goldman opens her heart and voice to sing some of her favorite torch songs in a one-woman Valentine’s show. “Get Your Heart on with Leslie G.” is the latest in Hawaiʻi Opera Theatre's Studio 101 concerts this Friday, Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 16 at 4 p.m. at the Hawaiʻi Opera Theater Plaza.
