Dan Frates never forgot a particular conversation he had with a little 4-year-old girl in upstate New York years ago. He shared how that little girl inspired his new children’s book, published by BeachHouse Publishing, called “A Shape Shifting Adventure in Hawaiʻi.”

Frates, who previously worked in early education, is currently an education specialist with the Hawaiʻi Department of Public Safety. He says he was very touched when an inmate asked if he could read Frates’ book to his children.

This interview aired on The Conversation on Nov. 8, 2021.
