The National Weather Service has cancelled a flash flood warning for Kauai first issued Friday. A tropical storm warning is posted for waters around the islands with high wave heights expected.
The weather service says the storm warning extends out to 40 nautical miles and may generate swells twice the significant wave heights usually seen in the offshore waters.
A small craft advisory also remains posted for parts of the island chain.
The weather service said at about 9 p.m. Friday, emergency management officials reported Kuhio Highway impassable near the Hanalei Bridge.
Kauai County emergency management officials had issued a statement that the highway in the vicinity of the bridge was closed until further notice. Hanalei Elementary School had been opened as an American Red Cross emergency shelter.
The officials warned driving on the island can be hazardous given conditions like ponding and low visibility.
Residents can get updates on road conditions and closures by calling (808) 241-1725. Officials asked that people not call the police at 911 unless they have an emergency.

Forecasters attributed the end of the week instability to a deep tropical moisture band that had settled over the western part of the state.
