A concept design for the proposed Keawalau development.

The Conversation has been taking a closer look at a proposed development project along the rail route in Waipahu. It envisions 500 units of affordable rentals as well as commercial development. Some say the proposal from developer Highridge Costa and landowner Kamehameha Schools is too high, and out of character, for the area.

Waipahu Neighborhood Board Member Richard Oshiro and Harrison Rue, head of Honolulu’s transit-oriented development program, shared how the Keawalau project might fit in, or not fit in, with the community.

This interview aired on The Conversation on May 5, 2022. The Conversation airs weekdays at 11 a.m. on HPR-1.
