Two years ago this month, The Conversation first connected with Honolulu businessman Johnson Choi, the head of the Hong Kong-China Hawaii Chamber of Commerce. His business dealings in Asia had just come through a rough patch with the Hong Kong protests and subsequent crackdown by the government. He had been looking forward to better times for the Lunar New Year, but the pandemic was just starting its grip on the world economy. There was so much uncertainty.

Flashforward to 2022. The Year of the Tiger begins with hopes of prosperity. But Choi says he is just surviving. The Conversation caught up with him this week in San Francisco, on the start of the Lunar New Year. He's looking forward to putting the past two years behind us — and getting back to business in Asia.

This interview aired on The Conversation on Feb. 4, 2022. The Conversation airs weekdays at 11 a.m. on HPR-1.
