Over the Fourth of July weekend, Waimānalo’s Lake ʻIolani Stevens-Ram won a champion belt buckle in women’s bronc riding at the Black Hills Roundup Rodeo in South Dakota. It was the first time the Roundup had held a bronc riding event for women in 80 years.

Stevens-Ram went on to secure another champion title in women’s bronc riding at the Cheyenne Frontier Days, claimed to be the largest outdoor rodeo in the world. The Conversation spoke with Stevens-Ram about what it’s like to be on the back of a bucking horse.
