Maui County Contains Last of Three Fires, Cause Undetermined

Maui firefighters on Monday contained the last of three fires that broke out over the weekend, the latest in a series of wildfires the county has fought this summer. There were no injuries or structural damage reported.

Firefighers reported it had contained the fire that was initially reported at 3:46 p.m. Sunday in Kihei mauka of the Lipoa Parkway and the Maui Brewing Co. The fire burned 270 acres, the largest of three fires initially reported Sunday.

While the fire was contained, firefighters are monitoring hot spots and say it could take days or weeks for the fire to be fully extinguished. Residents and visitors may see burning sections or "smokers" within the containment area that are being allowed to burn down, the county said.

A second fire in Waikapu was fully contained Monday after burning five acres, the county said in a news release. It was first reported at 4:48 p.m. off Waiko Road near the Apana scrap yard.

A third fire, also in Waikapu, was reported at 4:41 p.m. on the mauka side of the Honoapiilani Highway near the Kahili Golf Course. It had burned 10 acres and was also contained Monday.

None of the fires threatened homes and no evacuations were ordered. But Maui's emergency operations center had been partially activiated and roads were shut down when conditions warranted it. Roads were reopened Monday morning.

The cause of the three fires has not been determined.

Maui had been facing drought conditons and experienced two major fireslast month that forced evacuations, closed roadways and diverted airline flights.
