Honolulu Summer Fun Program Still Has Spots For Kids, Workers

The City and County of Honolulu's Summer Fun program is a few weeks away -- and there’s still room for kids and workers.

The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Parks and Recreation will once again be free for kids ages six to 13. The program will be offered on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Monday, June 7 through Tuesday, July 27.

The registration timeline has been rescheduled after the parks reservation system crashed last week. Laura Thielen, the director of the City's Department of Parks and Recreation, said they received higher than expected demand - between 10,000 and 12,000 users at one time.

The City's IT staff is working to address the issue and will be on standby for the next round of sign ups.

The next round of sign ups will be split over over the next two weekends to prevent another crash:

  • Saturday, May 15 at 9 a.m.: District 3 (Pearlridge to Wai?anae to Wahiaw?) ph. (808) 768-6889
  • Saturday, May 22 at 9 a.m.: District 4 (Waialua to Waim?nalo) ph. (808) 768-8980

Sign ups will be available through its PROS (Parks and Recreation Online System) website.

Thielen said it was important that the program be offered to children at no cost again.

"It wasn't a cost to make it free, it's just we weighed the revenue we would have to support the program," she said. "We felt that even though that's gonna hurt in the long run, we felt in the short run it was really important for the kids to be able to get back to some face to face activities so they could kinda get reintegrated into group activities before going back to school in the fall.

Interested parents can sign their kids up using the city’s parks and recreation online system, or by calling the park directly.

The city hopes to sign up to 6,000 kids for the program, and employ up 500 staffers. Interested workers can go to bit.ly/SummerFunJobs. The most demand is in District 2 (Makiki to ?Aiea) and District 4 (Makapu?u to Mokul??ia).
