Honoapiilani Highway Slope Stabilization Set For Completion Today

Hawaii Department of Transportation

State transportation officials say they plan to complete work on the hillsides above Honoapiilani Highway past Kapalua on Maui by Friday afternoon.

Access along the highway was limited after heavy rains caused rockfalls on Feb. 22 and Feb. 23. The debris slides occurred past the Nakalele Point Light Station at mile marker 39.5 and in Honokohau Valley at marker 36.5, the Department of Transportation said in a press release.

Crews removed loose rock and boulders to stabilize the slopes at 10 sites. Traffic in the area was limited duing the weekday while work was underway. Other than for local traffic and emergency vehicles, the public was urged to avoid the stretch between Fleming Beach and Camp Maluhia.

Guardrails that were damaged during the stabilization work will be replaced during repairs scheduled this summer, the department said.

Landslides also closed the Pali Highway on O?ahu in February.

Hundred of tons of rubble have been removed from around the Pali Highway Tunnels and construction crews are now working to stabilize the soil above the highway with completion projected for August.
