The Ala Moana Boulevard Pedestrian Bridge officially opened Thursday, offering a safer route that separates pedestrians from traffic.
The elevated walkway is located between Ward Avenue and Kamake‘e Street and crosses six lanes of traffic, connecting the Kaka‘ako community to Ala Moana Beach Park and Kewalo Basin.
The $17.8 million project was funded through federal grants and state funding at an 80 to 20 cost share. Victoria Ward Limited shared some of the state cost by donating land and paying for the bridge design and environmental documentation.

"The Ala Moana Pedestrian Bridge has been eagerly anticipated by many,” said Hawai‘i Department of Transportation Director Ed Sniffen in a news release. “Our partners in this project have done a fantastic job of building a walkway that will not only serve as a pedestrian and bike safety measure but as an aesthetic addition to the corridor.”
The completed project builds momentum for the upcoming expansion of Victoria Ward Park in 2026.
The bridge was dedicated in a blessing ceremony Thursday morning.
