3 dolphin carcasses found on Honolulu beaches, cause under investigation

DLNR

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration found three Fraser’s dolphin carcasses onshore between Diamond Head and Waikīkī this week.

Fraser’s dolphins typically swim far away from the shore in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. Approximately 10,000 swim near Hawaiʻi.

Ocean investigations and post-mortem examinations are currently being conducted by state and federal marine officials.

Shark bites were found in one of the dolphins.

The DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources warns beach-goers to exercise caution. For any sighting of live or deceased stranded marine mammals, call the DLNR’s hotline at (808) 634-DLNR or NOAA Marine Wildlife Hotline at (888) 256-9840.
