This year’s festival brings together some of Hawai‘i’s most extraordinary musicians, including Keola Beamer, Jeff Peterson, Brittni Paiva, Nathan Awe, Kainanai Kahaunaele, and Ledward Kaapana, — masters of ʻukulele and ki ho‘alu (slack key guitar) whose performances span generations and styles.

Directed and choreographed by David Ward, this high-energy Broadway musical reimagines classic fairytale characters through a pop-powered, empowering lens. With music from one of the biggest icons of the 1990s, this show is packed with heart, humor, and hits!

“This is a perfect show for high school students,” says Ward. “There are so many great roles, the music is fun, the choreography is inspired by the ‘80s and ‘90s, and the characters are bold and dynamic!”

Dancing in the Diaspora delves into the interconnected lives of Filipinos maneuvering the waters of belonging and exclusion in Hawai‘i and beyond. The original Filipino cultural production is a collaboration between UHM’s Dance Program and the Center for Philippine Studies (CPS) to unearth the dynamic powers of dancing, identity, healing, and moblizing community. This compelling, high-energy live performance interweaves cultural storytelling with dynamic Hip-hop, street dance, contemoprary, Filipino Indigenous, and ‘Ori Tahiti choreographies accompanied by live kulintang and soulful Tahitian music. This production celebrates the 50th anniversary of CPS, established in 1975 by an Act of the Hawai‘i State Legislature to recognize the contributions of Filipinos to Hawai‘i, and is now the most developed center of its kind in the diaspora.
Written and Directed by Dr. J. Lorenzo Perillo, Associate Professor and Co-Director of CPS, Dancing in the Diaspora assembles acclaimed international and local choreographers Mary Chris (Mycs) Villoso, Von Ace Asilo, Angela Sebastian, Ron Querian and Lydia Querian of House of Gongs, and Manarii Gauthier and Nalini Gauthier, founders of award-winning Tahiti Mana.

This production will be performed in a combination of Filipino, Ilokano, and English languages.

The stage at Windward Community College’s Palikū Theatre will transform into one of Hawaiʻi’s eeriest landscapes in November, when the Hawaiʻi Conservatory of Performing Arts presents The Green Lady of Wahiawā and Other Local Ghost Stories. Directed by Taurie Kinoshita, the premiere runs November 7–16.

Rooted in folklore, urban legends and historical accounts, the production reimagines some of Hawaiʻi’s most spine-tingling ghost stories—from the moss-haired Green Lady who terrifies Wahiawā gulch, to the blank-faced apparition who lurks in mirrors at Kahala Mall, to the infamous Kaimukī house haunted by a malevolent spirit.

The title tale, The Green Lady of Wahiawā, dates back to 1957 when children first reported sightings of a foul-smelling, seaweed-draped figure near Wahiawā Elementary. Over the decades, the legend became a cautionary fable meant to keep children from straying into the dangerous gulch.

The play also dramatizes The Faceless Woman, a ghost drawn from yōkai (Japanese supernatural beings) folklore and local reports from the old Waiʻalae Drive-In. Another vignette explores the Kasha of Kaimukī, a poltergeist or corpse-devouring demon said to torment those who enter its house.

Spanning the 1920s to present day, the show also incorporates stories tied to the Pali Highway and Japanese internment camps, weaving together themes of fear, bias, courage and faith. Each tale is staged in a unique style—film noir, realism, expressionism—offering audiences a theatrical journey into the supernatural side of Hawaiʻi.

Performances are recommended for ages 13 and up due to adult themes, language and minor stage violence.

Friends, an absurdist comedy by Abe Kōbō, asks the question “what do you do when 9 eccentric strangers knock on your door, invite themselves in, and decide to make themselves at home?” 90 minutes of slapstick comedy, flirtatious dialogue, and misunderstandings make this the comedy event of the season. This new staging from Late Night Artistic Director Robert Morris reimagines the world of Abe’s play as a studio taping of a sitcom and features live jazz music from a studio band. With its unique mix of music, comedy, and modern themes…there is something here for everyone to enjoy! Bring your own friends and be part of our live studio audience!

Our 2025 Request for Qualifications (RFQ) stems from Hui Mo‘olelo, a program that cultivates site-specific stories through community workshops rooted in Maui County. Selected artists will interpret one of these stories as a work of visual, performance, or experiential public art developed in collaboration with community members. The goal of these public art projects is to promote the unique history, culture and community of distinct sites throughout the County of Maui.

Please review each project description below carefully and base your proposal on one of the provided story excerpts. (Click https://vimeo.com/939718380 to view a 5-minute film summarizing this work.) We will accept submissions from a variety of disciplines, but are particularly interested in funding the following categories:
- New Media Projects (light, projection, or digital installations)
- Fine Art Performances (pop-up performances, street performances, or happenings)
- Interactive or Participatory Projects (works that invite audience or community engagement)
- Mural or Surface-Based Projects ( large-scale wall, column, or railing installations)
- Experiential or Environmental Art Installations (landscape-scale or site-integrated works)

Artist applications will be reviewed by a community panel. Selected artists will then enter a collaborative development phase, working closely with community members, Maui Public Art Corps, and partners to refine their initial ideas into a site-specific, participatory artwork. This process includes identifying a proverb from Mary Kawena Pukui’s ʻŌlelo No‘eau: Hawaiian Proverbs and Poetical Sayings to ground each work in historical and cultural context.
