Where Science Meets Art

Michael Nassir loves teaching students about the stars and planets. But the physics and astronomy instructor at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa also enjoys being a student himself, refining his musical skills as a lifelong pianist. Classical music is a rewarding way to balance his science career with this artistic passion.

Nassir recently returned from a weeklong piano coaching experience in the inaugural Salastina Chamber Music Workshop program at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, where he did a deep dive into Aram Khachaturian’s trio for clarinet, violin, and piano.

Nassir came on Evening Concert with host Craig DeSilva to talk about how the experience helped him grow as a pianist and replay the live concert that he performed in at the workshop.

Craig DeSilva is glad to be playing recorded music on the air instead of playing for a live audience on stage as did when he studied piano. He began piano lessons when he was a child and continued piano studies at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (where he majored in broadcast journalism and minored in music) under the late Peter Coraggio.
