For over forty years community groups across O‘ahu have fought to preserve the natural coastline between Hanauma Bay and Makapu‘u.  The deadline now is August 30th to raise funds to purchase the last mauka parcels.  HPR’sNoeTanigawa reports on the effort to preserve the  KaIwi coast.

The Trust for Public Land, Ka Iwi Coalition (under the nonprofit Livable Hawai‘i Kai Hui), and many community members are working together to purchase 182 acres mauka of Kalaniana‘ole Highway, between the Hawai‘i Kai Golf Course and Makapu‘u. The hilly Ka Iwi Coast Mauka Lands rise above Aw?wamalu (Alan Davis) where an ancient fishing village once stood. The community, through the nonprofit Livable Hawai‘i Kai Hui, will own and steward both properties. The State Department of Land and Natural Resources will impose deed restrictions, and the City will hold a conservation easement over the properties, thus ensuring that the lands will remain undeveloped forever.

Recognition to those people and groups, without whom we would have nothing to preserve:

Save Our Surf (1972), Save Wawamalu, Save Queen's Beach, Friends of Queen's Beach, Sandy Beach Defense Fund, Save Sandy Beach Initiative Coalition, Ka Iwi Action Council, and the Ka Iwi Coalition.  There may be more!

To contribute to the effort, contact the Trust for Public Land.

Livable Hawai‘i Kai Hui has updated information on fundraising activities and much on the history and culture of the area.
