Marion Jones on competing in Honolulu Triathlon decades after scandal

Marion Jones was once known as the fastest woman in the world. An elite track and field athlete, she won three gold medals and two bronze medals at the 2000 Summer Olympics.

But she was stripped of her medals after she admitted to lying to federal investigators about using performance-enhancing substances. She held an emotional press conference in 2007 on the same day she pleaded guilty to two counts of lying under oath.

That was nearly 20 years ago. Today, Jones defines herself as a mom, former athlete, and triathlete.

She touched down on Oʻahu this week ahead of the Honolulu Triathlon on Sunday. HPR talked to Jones about returning to the spotlight — and the lessons in resilience she wants to teach others.


The Honolulu Triathlon starts at Ala Moana Beach Park this Sunday. The bike portion will stretch along Ala Moana Boulevard and Nimitz Highway. For more information about street closures, click here.
