Water sampling from a neighborhood contaminated with fuel recently turned up high levels of something called BCEE, a potentially cancer causing chemical. The state Department of Health asked for guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention because there is little info about it. However, this past week, the Navy announced that those results were a false positive following repeat testing, and were found to be a reporting problem with the independent laboratory it used. This morning we talked to the Environmental Protection Agency. Luis Garcia-Bakarich is a specialist with the Drinking Water Emergency response team. He was out here in Hawaiʻi in February and just returned to the San Francisco office.
