Kumu Hula Cody Pueo Pata leads an international hula school from his home on Maui. Pata is a steering committee member for the Huamakahikina Hula Declaration, which was formulated last year. In it, hula teachers came together to document fundamental understandings about hula. And the energy of coming together is rippling into action now.

Earlier this month, Maui Mayor Michael Victorino announced the county will pitch in for a new hula center in Wailuku. Pata says support for these centers is growing statewide.

This interview aired on The Aloha Friday Conversation on Feb. 25, 2022. The Conversation airs weekdays at 11 a.m. on HPR-1.
