The Waikiki Improvement Association has decided to go ahead with the New Year’s Eve fireworks show — it went dark last year.

The organized event will be set off from a barge off Waikiki. You can watch safely from your homes if you have a view, or from a hotel balcony or lanai.

The Conversation talked to Thomas Likos, the Fireworks by Grucci producer behind this year’s events, about how to safely put on the 13-minute show during this latest increase in COVID-19.

This year, Hawaiʻi Public Radio will be simulcasting the music on HPR-1. Tune in at the stroke of midnight via traditional radio on 88.1 and 88.5 FM, or by streaming on the HPR website or mobile app.

This interview aired on The Conversation on Dec. 30, 2021. The Conversation airs weekdays at 11 a.m. on HPR-1.
