Izik in color, new variations in Honolulu style

Izik

Raised on Oʻahu, musician Izikwon his first Hoku Award in 2018 for songwriting. Turns out, songwriting is the foundation he has been building on ever since the beginning.

"Songwriting was kind of an escape for me as a kid. I just didn't really feel safe a lot of times, expressing myself to people, even if it was my family or friends and people I love. I just didn't really feel like I could be completely honest," he said.

Izik is finding his wings in music and on the Honolulu art scene. Hear about what inspires him these days and about his fruitful partnership with musician Imua Garza.

Find Izik on social media — and certainly playing around town. This interview aired on The Aloha Friday Conversation on Oct. 29, 2021.

Noe Tanigawa covered art, culture and ideas for two decades at Hawaiʻi Public Radio.
