The Push for Wildfire Prevention in Hawaiʻi

Prevention — that is critical in fighting the wildfires we have been seeing on the mainland and here in Hawaiʻi. Last week’s fire on Hawaiʻi island will go down as the largest to date. It burned at least 40,000 acres and claimed two houses.

The Conversation talked to Michael Walker and Clay Trauernicht about how important it is to put efforts into reducing the risk of wildfires.

Walker is with the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife. And from the University of Hawaiʻi's College of Tropical Agriculture, Trauernicht's expertise is in wildland fire management.

Walker said there are two competitive grant programs to help reduce the risks of a wildfire that are now open to 13 western states and the Pacific territories. The funds are for outreach, education, and fire prevention, he said.

This interview aired on The Conversation on Aug. 10, 2021.
