While drag culture has been recognized in Hawaiʻi for decades with the presence of māhū, a term to describe Native Hawaiians who identify with a third gender, the TV show "RuPaul’s Drag Race" had never featured a queen from the islands until this season. Sasha Colby not only competed against some of the nation's top drag performers but was eventually crowned the champion. A community resource fair in Honolulu was occupied by protesters this weekend after organizers announced that two local drag queens would host a keiki storytime event. The Kuaʻana Project hosted a rally at the state capitol building in Honolulu on Friday in honor of International Transgender Day of Visibility. Hundreds showed up to participate, waving signs and flags in support along Beretania Street. HPR's Savannah Harriman-Pote reports.
