The Conversation: Tackling Public Beach Access and Public Right of Way

Honolulu Department of Parks & Recreation

The debate over public access to beaches and parks is ubiquitous throughout our islands.

We were joined by the Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation for the City and County of Honolulu Laura Thielen, Free Access Coalition Coordinator John Shockley, and Hawaii County Councilmember Heather Kimball to decipher the public right of way in our state.

They discussed attempts to block beach access, parking capacity overflow, and managing tourism throughout our islands.
