Community meetings throughout Maui County are being held to help Mayor Michael Victorino and his administration craft its first budget that will cover fiscal year 2020-2021.
Topics for the meetings will include how taxpayer dollars are being used in the current $823.6 million budget. Residents are being asked for both written and verbal feedback.
"Suggestions from the public help us prioritize what is best for our community, and understand how to better serve our residents," said Mayor Victorino in a statement.
The directors and staff from each county department will attend the meetings to hear residents' concerns and to answer any questions about county-related issues.
Each meeting will begin with an overview of the current budget, followed by about an hour durng which attendees can submit comments. At the end of the meeting, the mayor and budget director will recap the issues raised by the public.
The first meeting is scheduled today in Upcountry Maui at 5:30 p.m. in the Mayor Hannibal Tavares (Pukalani) Community Center Social Hall.

After initial public input, the administration will draft a proposed budget and capital improvement program that is usually submitted to the Maui County Council in late March for review.
Public hearings will be held, giving the residents another chance to weigh in. The council will then amend or approve the budget by late spring.
