The Hawai‘i Department of Health (DOH) will resume use of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine starting on Thursday at O‘ahu's Windward Community College (WCC). Use of the vaccine was paused for nearly two weeks following six reported cases of severe blood clotting, which resulted in one death.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine will be offered at the WCC vaccination clinic on April 29, May 4, May 6, and May 11 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The shot is open for O‘ahu residents age 18 and older. Click here to registerfor the shot.

Other locations around the state will be announced in the coming days. More information can be found at the registration page of hawaiicovid19.com.

Use of the vaccine was paused for 11 days as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration examined the risk of blood clots developing in people who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The CDC and FDA cleared the use of the vaccine last week after determining the vaccine is safe and effective in preventing COVID-19, the risk of blood clots is very low, and the benefits of being vaccinated outweight any risk.

Appointments for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which use a different technology than the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and require two doses, are available across the state. Appointments can be made at hawaiicovid19.com.
