Biden Releases Federal Funds for Hawai?i Flooding Damage

Department of Land and Natural Resources

President Joe Biden has approved a major disaster declaration for the March floods, opening the door to federal funding.

Hawai?i, in particular Maui County, was hit hard with floods and storms which also caused landslides in March. Authorities ordered evacuations of several communities amid concerns over flooding.

Biden declared this a major disaster and ordered federal assistance to supplement state and local recovery efforts.

Funds will go to state and eligible local governments, and certain private nonprofit organizations. The money will be used to repair any facilities damaged by the storm, flooding and landslides.

Governor David Ige recently extended the state’s disaster emergency relief period to July 6.
