
Jason Ubay
Managing Editor, NewsJason Ubay is HPR's managing editor, where he works with the station's team of reporters and digital producers to create news content for broadcast and digital platforms. He brings more than 15 years of professional journalism experience in Honolulu to the role. He was most recently a producer on The Conversation.
He previously was managing editor of Hawaii Business magazine for five years, where he compiled lists and managed the brand's social media accounts. He later covered tourism and financial institutions at Pacific Business News. He holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and previously served on the board of the Asian American Journalists Association-Hawaiʻi chapter. He participated in AAJA's Executive Leadership Program in 2021.
Jason spent three years as a stay-at-home dad and has great respect for caregivers. He also won a pizza eating contest in 2010, played high school football with Matt Leinart and Colt Brennan, and drinks his coffee black.

The American Red Cross of Hawaii is seeking shelter volunteers, medical professionals and disaster action team members. Volunteers or anyone who needs assistance from the Red Cross will not be turned away due to vaccination status, but a quarantine area will be set up for anyone exhibiting symptoms.

Hawai'i will lift its eviction moratorium Aug. 6. While a federal eviction moratorium may prevent immediate action on evictions, the state is urging renters to seek rental assistance through the counties and tap into mediation. However, there is no easy way to track how much money is still available in each county.

Hawaiian Airlines reported a net loss of $6.2 million in the second quarter. But it had more traffic in June 2021 than June 2019, and it's seeing strong bookings through the end of the year.

The Pololū Trail Steward Program hopes to hire local residents to act as conservations and tourism liaisons in an increasingly crowded trail. The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority is funding a pilot project in collaboration with Kupu, Nā Ala Hele Trails and Access Program, and local families in Pololū and the neighboring ahupuaʻa.

The state is expanding its Safe Travels program to include visitors from the Philippines and South Korea. Starting July 15, travelers from these countries with a negative COVID-19 test from a trusted testing partner will be able to bypass Hawaiʻi's mandatory 10-day quarantine.
