Olivia Moving Away from State; Tropical Storm Warning for O?ahu Canceled

Olivia continues to weaken as it moves south-southwest of the state. The Tropical Storm Warning for O?ahu has been canceled. Olivia made landfall earlier today over Northwest Maui at approximately 9:10 AM. There are reports the storm has made second landfall on Lanai at approximately 9:54 AM.

 

As of 4:50 PM, Olivia is weakening with sustained winds of around 40 mph, with occasional higher gusts. It is moving south-southwest at 20 mph, and was last positioned 110 miles southwest of Honolulu and 145 miles west-southwest of Kaunakakai.

Although the storm is moving away from the islands, forecasters are warning residents to still be vigilant. High winds and torrential rains are still a possibility for the next several days.

A flash flood warning has been extended for Maui until 7:15 PM as rains associated with Olivia move over parts of the state. A flash flood watch is in effect for O?ahu, Kaua?i and Ni?ihau until 6 AM Friday, September 14.

high surf warning has been issued for east-facing shores of the Big Island and Maui County, and a high surf advisory is in effect for east-facing shores of Oahu.

 

At 2 PM, Maui Electric Company reported that approximately 7,900 customers in parts of Upcountry Maui, East Maui, and Molokai are without power. Customers experiencing an outage or encounter downed power lines, should report them to MECO's trouble line at 871-7777 or toll free at 1-877-871-8461.

As of 3:30 PM today, Hawaiian Electric Company reports 1,200 O?ahu customers were without power, and crews are responding to the outages caused byt he storm. O?ahu customers should report outages by calling the trouble line at 1-855-304-1212.

 
Maui officials say several homes in the 4700 to 4800 block of Lower Honoapi?ilani Highway are being evacuated due to rising waters in a nearby river. Motorists are being advised to avoid this area of Lower Honoapiilani Highway.

• Kaupakaula Rd -  open

• Ula Ino Rd. (Hana) - closed

• Waikoloa Rd. (Hana) - closed

• MM14 Landslide (Hana) - closed

• Ehu Rd. Tree down, blocking access - closed

• Iao Valley Rd below Kepaniwai Bridge, Mud slides - closed

• Lepo St, Large tree down across lines (Haiku) - closed

• L.Honoapiilani Hwy, Grate plugged and causing flooding (Lahaina) - closed

• Equipment will be staged on Hana Hwy. - A message board will be placed at Twin Falls warning of potential landslides.

• Hana Hwy MP21 - Open

• Hana Hwy MP26 partial blockage (Hana)

• Kam V @ MP#7 Eastbound - Open

• Hana Hwy W of Kawai Ola PL - closed (Hana)

• Kaumalapau Hwy (Ilima/Lanai Ave), partial road blockage from tree (Lanai)

 

At 9 AM Wednesday, the Coast Guard reopened commercial ports in Hawai?i and Kaua?i Counties. Honolulu and Maui County port re-openings are dependent on the passage of Olivia and assessments of any storm impacts.

 

Governor David Ige signed an emergency proclamation that will provide relief for disaster damages, losses and suffering caused by Hurricane Olivia.The proclamation declares the counties of Hawai‘i, Maui, Kalawao, Kaua‘i and the City and County of Honolulu disaster areas for the purpose of implementing emergency management functions. The proclamation also authorizes the expenditure of state monies as appropriated for the speedy and efficient relief of damages, losses, and suffering resulting from Hurricane Olivia. Gov. David Ige said, “We’re monitoring this storm closely and taking steps now to ensure that we’re prepared for its impacts to the state. A tropical storm could bring heavy rain and flooding, especially in places that are saturated from previous storms. Now is the time to prepare."
