The state health department has fined Maui Asphalt of Kauaʻi more than $100,000 for polluting state waters.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Health cited the company for discharging pollutants into state waters without a permit or pollution control practices.

In addition to the $107,500 fine, Maui Asphalt must obtain and comply with a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit.

The health department says it has never applied for one.

The company also needs to develop a stormwater pollution control plan within 30 days.

The company has operated at its Waimea, Kauai site for five years. In that time, weather data recorded 43 instances of pollutants such as aggregate, dirt and oils being discharged into state waters.
