Daily COVID-19 case count tops 1K for 5th day in a row

Monday marked the fifth day in a row of new case counts over 1,000.

Hawaiʻi health officials reported 1,384 new COVID-19 cases on Monday. The state reported a new single-day record of 2,205 cases on Sunday.

  • Dec. 23, 2021 - 1,511 new cases
  • Dec. 24, 2021 - 1,828 new cases
  • Dec. 25, 2021 - 1,591 new cases
  • Dec. 26, 2021 - 2,205 new cases
  • Dec. 27, 2021 - 1,384 new cases

Lt. Gov. Josh Green said 100 people are hospitalized with COVID-19 — 38 were vaccinated.

Over the past 14 days, there have been 13,966 new cases. Health officials consider that the number of active cases.

The positivity rate is 11.8% statewide and 13.9% on Oʻahu.

Local and national officials urge caution, vaccinations and safe gatherings this holiday season amid the Omicron variant.

The number of daily cases in the U.S. topped 197,000 on Friday, a 65% increase over two weeks ago and nearing the record of 251,000 new daily cases set in January, NPR reported.

"Go get your booster shot. Get it right now. Don’t wait. Other than that, the things we know work still work," State Health Director Dr. Elizabeth Char said. "So wear your masks, especially when you’re indoors and especially when you are with people who are outside your regular household bubble."

Char said only about 23% of Hawaiʻi’s population have gotten a booster shot, and more than 370,000 are still completely unvaccinated.

County mayors have not made any changes to current coronavirus restrictions, most of which were lifted in early December.
