HOLO card fare system is running normally after cyberattack

Honolulu’s HOLO card bus fare system is running normally once again.

The city stopped HOLO card operations last week, after a cyberattack hit Oʻahu Transit Services, the operator of TheBus and TheHandi-Van.

The cyberattack shut down OTS’ administrative and operating systems, disabling online services for TheBus and its app, the HOLO card, as well as TheHandi-Van’s reservation and scheduling services.

While the HOLO card call center is now open, officials say they may be experiencing high call volumes.

Information about retail locations that load and distribute HOLO cards is back online.

However, the bus pass office at Kalihi Transit Center remains closed.

City officials have said HOLO card account information is stored on different servers than the ones targeted, and they do not believe any personal information was compromised.

TheBus and TheHandi-Van are running as normal, although real-time location services for both are still down.

Federal, state and local law enforcement are investigating the cyber intrusion, which officials say bears the hallmarks of a ransomware attack.
