Children's Literature Conference Kicks Off This Weekend

Children’s Literature Hawai‘i

Have you ever thought about writing a children's book? You can learn more about it at the Children’s Literature Conference that starts Friday online. A writing-intensive for teens-only is just one of the free workshops offered this weekend.

The Twentieth Biennial Conference on Literature and Children kicks off Friday online from O'ahu. The Honolulu Theatre for Youth will lead readings by featured authors and artists.

Kamehameha Schools graduate Lehua Parker writes speculative fiction often set in Hawai'i. Author of the well-received Niuhi Shark Saga series, Parker is featured Saturday morning. After that, free teen-only workshops get underway.

Others can attend sessions about, for example, how to write books that turn kids into readers. There's a session on bilingual storybook making for Pacific islanders.

On Saturday afternoon, offerings include a talk story with Alice Guild, who was instrumental in helping to save 'Iolani Palace at a crisis point in 1969. She'll be discussing her first books.

Isolation and downtime during COVID prompted many people to write more--emails to friends, texts, even journals and blogs. On Sunday, authors share paths to publication, among other sessions.

Then on Monday, the conference heads to Hawai'i island with insights from an artist/author in Volcano—hear from librarians in Hilo, Kealakekua, and Kailua-Kona.
