The Waikīkī Aquarium was on the brink of financial ruin due to the pandemic. But support from donors, the University of Hawaiʻi, and state legislature helped see them through. Now the aquarium is looking toward reopening and recovery.

The Waikiki Aquarium will be upgrading a water system over the next five years as part of an agreement with the state Department of Health over a discharge citation.

The department cited the aquarium for discharging water from tanks and exhibits into coastal waters.

Between 2014 and 2018, the aquarium exceeded the limit allowed under its permit, the department said. An old system supplying saltwater to exhibits and research areas was found to have caused the discharges.

The University of Hawaii and aquarium management implemented solutions to stop the violations once they were notified.

The health department and the university, which oversees the aquarium, reached an agreement to upgrade the system in lieu of paying a fine.

The aquarium will have to propose and implement a health department-approved project valued at $90,000 or more.
