Latest Segment of Saddle Road Opens

Transportation on the Big Island of Hawaii has changed forever -- at least one part of it -- the cross-island road connecting East and West Hawaii. There's a stretch of new road, and a new name. HPR's Sherry Bracken was there over the weekend for the opening.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory says the earthquake hit at 5:54 p.m. Monday near the Kīlauea volcano. Officials say the initial quake and a magnitude 3.0 aftershock were not related to volcanic activity. Aftershocks are likely to continue.

Monday marked the one-year anniversary of the 2022 Maunaloa eruption. The dormant volcano on the Big Island came to life in the middle of the night on Nov. 27, 2022 — for the first time in 38 years. Jessica Ferracane, the spokesperson for Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, spoke to The Conversation about the latest seismic news.
