Today our series welcomes back a Hawaii favorite. Hall and Oates legend John Oates speaks with All Things Considered Honolulu Host Dave Lawrence. Subscribe to the latest episodes on Apple, Google and Spotify podcasts. Our interview archive includes hours of interviews and exclusive musical performances connecting with artists around the world during the pandemic, including the complete interview session for each artist.

John Oates is half of the top-selling duo in music history, and a band with a long history in the islands. In fact, local artists Cecilio and Kapono, as well as Kalapana, covered the early Hall and Oates songs “Goodnight and Good Morning” and "When The Morning Comes" back in the mid-1970s, bringing these Hall and Oates album tracks to Hawaii radio listeners. They remain staples in Hawaii pop culture to this day, and helped solidify Hall and Oates’ local popularity. The band have sold out venues in the islands for decades. Their 2020 area dates have been rescheduled multiple times after the pandemic blew out concerts, currently set for November 9 at the MACC and November 13 at the Blaisdell Arena.

In our feature, we hear about John’s experience with the pandemic, how it affected the Hall and Oates tour, and how he’s spent his time during this unusual period. We also discuss John’s unique way of trying to help Americans who are suffering economically due to the pandemic. He’s revived his Oates Song Fest 7908 as an all-star virtual event this Saturday. While a number of noted musicians offer performances, along with dialog, special features and surprises, folks will be able to make donations to Feeding America. The event begins at 8pm Eastern. It can be attended free via Nugs.tv. John explained how the event came together, and detailed some of the stories of his connections to many of the artists appearing, which include Dave Grohl, Michael McDonald, Darius Rucker, Bob Weir, Lyle Lovett, Sammy Hagar, Kevin Cronin, his partner Daryl Hall and many others.

We’ve also posted the complete interview below, with lots more fun conversation.
