Come join us for this monthʻs book sale! We'll have a large selection of SciFi books (exciting yeah?) AND for PreSchool and Kindergarten Teachers... we've received a large donation of Super Big, Giant Children's Books perfect for classroom story time. We'll also have Hawaiiana, Fiction, NonFiction, Children's and Special Collectible books. Most books are ONLY $2.00, so it's well worth a trip to Kailua-Kona town!

Come play in nature on an easy and beautiful walk with Dr. Gaby Toloza at Kawainui Marsh Trail.
This event is about practicing self-compassion, presence and the practice of “noting” while walking in nature. Take a pause from daily life routines and treat yourself to a couple hours of mindful presence and grounding in nature. Connect with yourself, other mindful humans and nature in an abundant environment, surrounded by the birdsong, stunning views and the fresh air. It's the perfect opportunity to unwind, reflect, and show yourself some love. There will be intention setting, sharing of experience and some reflective journaling. Light refreshments will be provided. Don't miss out on this unique experience!

Q: What should I bring and prepare for my visit?
A: We recommend coming prepared for a comfortable and enjoyable visit:

Wear comfortable walking shoes – the path is graveled.

Sun protection is essential – bring sunscreen, an umbrella, or a hat as the weather can be sunny or rainy.

Stay hydrated – bring your own water bottle.

Dogs are welcome – as long as they’re comfortable on a leash and in a natural setting.

Children are welcome too – it’s a family-friendly environment!

Make little mechanical marvels from paper, paperclips, cardboard tubes, and other junk!

Get Creative & Play with Purpose at "Makers Play" Art Playshops!
Ready to turn trash into treasure? Join veteran art educator Kilikina and imaginative puppet designer Patricia Brubaker for a one-of-a-kind creative adventure! These lively hands-on Saturday "Makers Play" Playshops invite both youth and adults to explore the magic of upcycling through art.

Using recycled plastic scrap paper and found objects participants will transform the ordinary into the extraordinary: think whimsical toys, bold costumes, expressive masks, and even giant street puppets ready to strut!

This 2-hour interactive workshop is made free to the public through a grant from the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation and will go over the most essential e-bike topics: what Hawai‘i’s laws say about e-bikes, introduction & rundown of e-bike lingo, what sets them apart from traditional bicycles, pros & cons on different component options, and best practices for safe e-biking in Hawai‘i! These workshops are designed to get responsible teens & adults into the awesome world of electric bicycles safely & confidently with Hawai‘i’s bicycling-experts.

All registrants will get a chance to test ride e-bikes in this FREE workshop (we've got an awesome variety of different types and styles of electric bicycles attendees will be able to choose from!). This workshop is put on by your friends at Hawai‘i Bicycling League with help from a grant through the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation.

Public Tours of Foster Botanical Garden resume in January 2025!

Volunteer docents will conduct tours on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., rain or shine.

Docents just completed a six-week training and are eager to engage the public meaningfully.

On these tours, docents will provide an overview and some details of some of the gardenʻs seven sections. No two tours are the same—different docents bring different background knowledge and life experiences. All are passionate about plants.

Tours are limited to about 20 people and are included in the price of admission ($5 for visitors, $3 for residents, $1 for children).

Intro to Shooting Film SLR

Atis will be going over the basic operations of using a film SLR camera, determining exposures using built-in/external light meter & the using the Sunny 16 rule. After going over the operations, the group will go on a photowalk in Kaka'ako & shoot which will give opportunities to practice & consider any compensation that may be necessary. Good for the first timer or a great refresher workshop.

A manual film SLR 35mm or medium format cameras are welcome, preferable one with a working meter. You will also be able to use your external light meter or app.

Atis Puampai has been the photo instructor at UH Manoa & Kamehameha Schools.

The Hawaii Watercolor Society (HWS) 2025 Open Exhibition consists of artwork created by artists using water-soluble media such as transparent watercolor, gouache, casein, acrylics, water-soluble crayons, and water-soluble pencils. Juror of the show, Gary Tucker, has selected 62 paintings representing 51 artists from the 128 works submitted for the exhibit. The Exhibition will occur from July 29 to August 23, Tuesday - Sunday, 11 AM - 5 PM at the Downtown Art Center (DAC, 1041 Nu’uanu Ave., 2nd Floor in Honolulu). A free demonstration by Gary Tucker is on Sunday, July 27, 2-4 PM at the DAC. Opening Reception is Friday August 1, 5-8 PM.
