Second Saturday at the Urban Garden Center

Join the Oahu Master Gardeners and Urban Garden Center (UGC) experts for a morning of exciting activities!
About this event

Entrance to the Urban Garden Center is limited to registered guests only. Entry gates will open at 8:15 am. Only guided tours are available. The rest of the gardens are closed to self-tours.

$5 General admission includes (kids enter free):

9:00 - 11:30 am: Fun family activities include bee keeper display, honey extraction and tasting, pot a plant to take home, solitary bee house activity, spin game, native insects, and pollinator plant sale. Researchers from the Hawaii Invertebrate Program, DLNR/DOFAW, will be on hand to talk about native insects such as the Kamehameha Butterfly, Yellow-face Bees, and damselflies.
9:30 am: Weigh-in for the UH 4-H Giant Fruit and Vegetable Contest, including giant pumpkins, tomatoes and sunflowers.
9:00, 9:30, 10:00 am: Join the Rosarian experts from the Honolulu Rose Society for a 30-min tour of the beautiful rose gardens.
9:30 - 10:00 am: Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) Team presentation followed by an open house Q & A. They'll cover updates about the status of CRB and share steps you can take to protect palms in your area.
10:00 am: Kids welcome to join. Seed harvest demonstrations at the MG training garden.
10:30 am: Giant Fruit and Vegetable Contest Award Ceremony.

$7 Workshop tickets required for the following (workshop ticket includes general admission activities):

8:30 - 9:30 am: Master Gardener (MG) Bonnie McCann leads a Bucket Composting how-to demonstration for harvesting nutrient rich compost. A limited supply of buckets will be availble to take home.
8:30 - 9:00 am: Tree grafting demonstration by Grafting Hui Leader Richard Karamatsu.
9:15 - 9:45 am: Learn to construct a rain barrel from MG Glen Cordeiro to help the Oahu water conservation effort. Bring your own barrel to have holes drilled and ask questions.
9:30 - 10:30 am: Fruit Hui members will conduct a mini workshop on Avocados for the Home Garden in the UGC fruit orchard. Learn about Varieties, Fertilizing, Pests, Pruning, and Harvesting.

Master Gardener experts will be available for consultation on gardening topics. Guests are welcome to bring plant samples and ask questions. CTAHR seeds will be for sale. Flowers and limited plants for sale.

UGC Guidelines:
Guest registration required on Eventbrite.
Event hours from 8:30 am to 11:30 am.
The restrooms will be open during the event hours.
Bring drinking water to stay hydrated in the heat. Food will not be for sale.
Wear appropriate outdoor attire: closed toe shoes and a hat or umbrella.
Only guide dogs are allowed. No pets allowed.
Only guided tours are available. The rest of the gardens are closed to self-tours.
All guests must sign a UGC consent waiver at the registration area upon arrival.
UGC follows UH COVID-19 policies and requires that face masks be worn in any indoor areas. Face masks are optional outdoors. UH strongly recommends that participants stay home when feeling ill, whether with COVID-19 or other illness, to recover and prevent community spread.

UGC reserves the right to restrict admission to anyone that does not adhere to the UH and UGC policies.
