Wailuku town in the mid 20th century. Note the Iao Theatre on the left.

Maui's Island Plan, adopted in 2012, makes it a priority to preserve the unique character of Maui's small towns.  The idea is to be able to drive through largely agricultural or undeveloped areas between these distinctive centers.

Wailuku, Maui’s county seat, is well situated at the mouth of Iao Valley.  Inside the wooden storefronts, mom and pop shops from the mid-twentieth century have been replaced by offices and new small businesses.  Excitement is high today because tonight’s first Friday party is a grand relaunch of what used to be Maui’s party of the year.  HPR’sNoeTanigawa reports.

First Fridays turned out to be such a good idea in Wailuku that other towns in the county are jumping on board.  Enjoy special events in Lahaina on Second Fridays, in Makawao on third Fridays, Kihei has kapu'ed fourth Fridays and when there is fifth Friday, Lana'i gets into the action.
