Some 800 cyclists took to Oʻahu's North Shore for the Haleiwa Metric Century Ride last week. It was the first time in two years that the Hawaii Bicycling League could stage such an event.

Lori McCarney has led the organization through this challenging time. She says the next big event in September, the Century Challenge, is a major fundraiser for the group’s advocacy and education programs. The league is looking forward to welcoming visitors from Japan, which make up a big part of the ride across Oʻahu.

Though bicycling events have returned, McCarney just stepped down as head of the league. She is setting her sights on her next bike adventure: a ride from Paris to Istanbul later this year. She says the organization will continue to explore creating new bike paths and improving existing ones. Travis Counsell has taken over the helm.
