This local author's first children's book explores finding delight in your own backyard

Penguin Random House

Hawaiʻi author Lois-Ann Yamanaka may not have set out to be an author writing about serious themes like cultural alienation and abuse, but she says she also didn't really listen to her mother — who early on said she saw her daughter writing children’s books.

But Yamanaka is finding her way and this year published her first children’s book "Snow Angel, Sand Angel." She spoke with The Conversation about her foray into children's literature.

This interview aired on The Conversation on Feb. 15, 2022. The Conversation airs weekdays at 11 a.m. on HPR-1.

Catherine Cruz is the host of The Conversation. Originally from Guam, she spent more than 30 years at KITV, covering beats from government to education. Contact her at ccruz@hawaiipublicradio.org.
