Best Buddies Hawaiʻi event celebrates leaders spreading the message of inclusion

Best Buddies Hawaiʻi

Social isolation during the pandemic has impacted every community in our state, including the Hawaiʻi Chapter of Best Buddies, a nonprofit that creates employment, development, and friendship opportunities for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, or IDD.

The organization went from holding face-to-face activities to hosting online sessions for its special needs members. The Conversation sat down with State Director Karen Glasser for a program update and got a first-hand perspective from ambassador and advisory board member Hoʻopiʻo Balaz.

Musicians Henry Kapono, Robi Kahakalau and others will be entertaining at “Champion of the Year Friendship Jam,” an in-person celebration this Sunday, Nov. 14, at Blue Note Hawaiʻi.

This interview aired on The Conversation on Nov. 8, 2021.

Lillian Tsang is the senior producer of The Conversation. She has been part of the talk show team since it first aired in 2011. Contact her at ltsang@hawaiipublicradio.org.
