Zócalo Panel Addresses "Will Pidgin Survive the 21st Century?"

Hawaii Public Radio

Today we’re bringing you the highlights from a recent town hall gathering. The forum was brought to you by Zocalo Public Square, the Daniel K. Inouye Institute and Hawaii Public Radio. The starting point for our discussion was the question: “Will Pidgin Survive the 21st Century?

The panelists were:

  • Sarah Roberts, sociolinguist and scholar of American pidgin languages. She’s familiar with Hawai’i, has relatives here, and did graduate work at UH Manoa.

  • Hawai‘i Governor John D. Waihe?e III, the first state governor of Hawaiian ancestry. Born in Honoka’a, he was instrumental in making Hawaiian an official state language

  • Katie Drager, Co-director of the University of Hawai’i Sato Center for Pidgin, Creole, and Dialect Studies.

  • Comedian Andy Bumatai; a model pidgin speaker. If you need lessons in pidgin and other things local, we highly recommend his Youtube series, Daily Pidgin.
