Overview of Legislative Bills: Josh Green

This session Hawaii Island Senator Josh Green has a very long shopping list for the Legislature. Bills that bear his name number about three dozen and range from affordable housing to dengue fever, a minimum wage hike to raising the floor of starting teachers’ salaries… and a whole lot in between. With so many bills in so many directions, we asked Senator Green what measures will take priority and why.

In the beginning was the drum, in tandem with the human voice, at the birth of all music.  Since then percussion instruments, and the ways of playing them, have gone through seemingly infinite variations.  It’s a fascinating world that Colin Currie knows well as he’s a master percussionist who performs all over the world.  He’s in Honolulu for a weekend of concerts with the Hawaii Symphony, with a schedule that includes a masterclass at UH and a visit to Niu Valley Middle School. This Saturday and Sunday he’ll make his Hawaii Symphony  debut performing Jennifer Higdon’s Percussion Concerto in a program that also includes Beethoven’s Second Symphony and Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin.

Farmer's Response to DOA Interview: Seizen Bonk

Agriculture in Hawaii is changing and the future of farming could take our state in a few different directions. Earlier this month, we spoke with Scott Enright, director of the Department of Agriculture, about the changes he sees (that conversation is on the HPR2 archive if you missed it). Then, we got a call from Seizen Bonk. He’s been farming since 1974 and has a more sobering view of Hawaii’s agricultural future. When we spoke, I asked him for his take on the farming movement now and what comes next. Bonk and his wife work on 20 acres on Hawaii Island and their farming has taken them from ginger in Hilo to melons, onions, and sweet potatoes on Moloka‘i, and back to the Big Island in Kamuela where they grow leaf vegetables.

Hawaii tour guides get to know the categories their clients fall into: the adventure traveler, the culture and history buffs, and a growing new category… the culinary tourist.   Michelle Lemay is a Kauai tour guide who’s seeing more and more of them, and she’ll be getting her share at the upcoming Kauai North Shore Food Tour.  The next tour is set for Tuesday, February 2nd.
