World events over the past year have again refocused the issues of personal safety, security and freedom. But beyond the attention paid after headlines and tragedies, travel alerts and inconveniences, how much do you consider the consequences of what may seem necessary limits to your liberty?  Ben Wizner is the director of the ACLU Speech, Privacy, & Technology Project perhaps now  best known as the attorney for NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. Wizner is in Honolulu to teach during the annual UH law school J term, but first  he joined us in our studio for a discission. One of Wizner’s sessions, Surveillance in a Free Society, is open to the public at the UH Law School this Friday, from 5:30-7:45 p.m.

There always seem to be gaps between generations. We grow up wondering why adults don’t understand us and end up wondering why we don’t understand our children… and so the cycles continue.   In two new plays by Lee Cataluna, Mud Pies and Magic, at the Honolulu Theatre for Youth, the generations reach out to one another through play, and maybe learn something along the way.  Mud Pies and Magic will have its world premiere Friday, January 15th at 7 p.m. and continues on Saturdays through Feb. 6th at Tenney Theatre on the grounds of The Cathedral of St. Andrew.

Hawaii energy issues continue to take a big part of the spotlight. A look at just the past year shows Hawaii’s commitment to a 100% renewable standard by 2045, the PUC hearings on the Next Era deal, and now approval for additional promises from the company. Add in adjustments in the solar industry and continued calls for island energy co-opts, and how energy is generated and at what cost may be taking much of your attention. It will also occupy the work of the state House committee on Energy and Environmental protection Chair Chris Lee, who joined The Conversation to give an update.

Whether or not we like to admit it, we spend much of our lives wondering what we’re worth, and inevitably, money enters into the mix.    Can we really put a number to our value on this earth?   If not, then how do we assess our value?   Theater artist Lucie Lynch and her partner Marcia Zina Mager tackle those questions head-on in their two-woman show Money Talks: But What the Hell is it Saying?   The show takes place at the 2016 Maui Fringe Festival in the Iao Theatre in Wailuku, Maui from Jan. 22-24.
